Private Loften Matthews was born in Angier, North Carolina on May 25, 1894.

Loften Matthews was married and living in the 100 block of Mount Vernon Street when he registered for the draft in June of 1917. He was then working at the nearby Public Service gas plant. By June of 1918 he had moved to 1056 South 2nd Street. Loften Matthews was inducted into the United States Army on June 20, 1918 and sent to Camp Dix. After a month’s training he was assigned to Company C, 807th Pioneer Infantry Regiment. Private Matthews went overseas in September. A victim of the Spanish flu pandemic, he died of bronchial pneumonia on November 8, 1918.
