John E. Shuler
Staff Sergeant John E. Shuler, 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, U.S. Army.
Sergeant John E. Shuler was born John E. Szuler on August 15, 1912. The family later changed their name to Shuler. In 1930, the Shulers were living at 422 Viola Street. His father was a laborer at the McAndrews & Forbes Licorice works at South 3rd and Jefferson Streets; older sister Violet and John were working in a hosiery factory as a topper and a helper, respectively. By the time the war came the Shulers were living at 1842 Fillmore Street, in Camden NJ’s 8th Ward. John Shuler was able to graduate from Camden High, and later attended the Spring Garden Institute. He was very active in basketball and baseball.
After entering the Army in July of 1942, he trained at Camp Gruber OK, Fort Sam Houston TX, and at Shreveport LA. He qualified to join the Rangers, the Army’s original Special Forces unit. He also was decorated for saving the life of a fellow soldier.
Staff Sergeant John Shuler was killed in the fighting in Italy shortly after the Anzio invasion. He was survived by his parents, John and Anna Shuler, a brother Walter, and three sisters, Stella, Violet, and Mary.
Camden Sergeant Killed in Action on Italian Front

A South Camden staff sergeant attached to the American Rangers is reported killed in Italy, in announcements made by the War Department.

Staff Sergeant John E. Shuler, 32, of 1842 Fillmore Street.
Sgt. Shuler, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shuler, was killed May 14 in Italy, according to a message received by the family. He entered the service in July, 1942, and trained at Camp Gruber OK, Fort Sam Houston TX, and Shreveport LA before going overseas a year ago. He was attached to the American Rangers.
Solemn Requiem mass for the dead soldier will be conducted at 9:00 AM next Wednesday in St. Joseph’s Church, with the Reverend Leon S. Winowicz as celebrant, the Reverend Lawrence Faber as deacon, and the Reverend Henry Blaszczynski as sub-deacon. The Right Reverend Monsignor Arthur B. Strenski will be in the sanctuary.
Commended for Heroism
Sergeant Shuler was commended for heroism in aiding in the rescue of a seriously wounded fellow soldier who was carried from a foxhole under heavy enemy fire.

A Solemn Requiem High Mass with Catafalque will be celebrated for S-Sgt. John E. Shuler, 32, in St. Joseph’s church, Tenth and Mechanic streets, tomorrow, 9 a. m.
The Rev. Leon S. Winowicz will be the celebrant, the Rev. Lawrence Faber will act as decon, and the Rev. Henry Blaszczynski will act as subdeacon. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Arthur B. Strenski, pastor of the church, will be in the sanctuary.
Sergeant Shuler was killed in action May 14 in Italy. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shuler, 1842 Fillmore street. He was attached to the American Rangers and had been cited for heroism.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Walter, and three sisters, Mrs. Stella Ricco, Mrs. Violet Grabe and Mary Shuler.
