Edward A. 'Dick' Malan

Edward A. “Dick” Malan was born in Heightstown NJ in 1887 to Mr. and Mrs. John Malan. The family moved to Camden NJ in 1895, living at 898 Penn Street (9th and Penn) in North Camden. John Malan operated a saloon for many years at 9th and Lawrence Streets, and also worked as a watchman.

A local businessman, Frank Clayton, who operated cigar store and pool room at 9th and Linden Streets, sponsored an athletic club, the Clayton A.C. “Dick” Malan was a star player on these teams in the years before World War I. He also played for the Catholic Lyceum team, the Lyceum being the predecessor to Camden Catholic High School.

“Dick” Malan found employ in the railroad industry. After starting with the Reading Railroad in the Philadelphia fright office, he took employ with he Pennsylvania Railroad in Camden. He was wed to wife Barbara in 1920, and moved to Pitman NJ, where he was living at the time of the April 1930 Federal census. The Malans later moved to the Chalcar Apartments at 220 Cooper Street in Camden.

Edward A. “Dick” Malan passed away January 4, 1950, and was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Delaware Township (present-day Cherry Hill) NJ.
