Private David H. Ross was born in New Jersey on January 5, 1894, the son of Horace and Sarah Ross. When the Census was taken in 1900, the family lived at 213 Birch Street in North Camden. The elder Ross worked as a cloth cutter.

David Ross was single and living at 1269 Everett Street in June of 1917 when he registered for the draft. He was then working as an operating engineer for the Public Service Gas Company. Prior to his induction into the United States Army on August 28, 1918, he had married Thelma Porter, and had lived at 844 Spruce Street in Camden, NJ.

After joining the Army, David Ross was sent to Camp Meade, MD, where he was assigned to the 154th Depot Brigade. He was subsequently transferred to Company D, 32nd Machine Gun Battalion.

David Ross died of pneumonia at Camp Meade, Maryland on September 28, 1918. His father passed away shortly afterwards. Besides his wife and mother, David Ross was survived by two brothers, Elmer and Howard Ross, also of the Spruce Street address.
