FRANKLIN GAUNT SAPP was born in Camden, New Jersey on August 1, 1895 to Frank G. and Nellie Sapp. He was the third child, coming after daughters Eva and Nellie. When the Census was taken in 1900 the family lived at 1032 South 4th Street. His father was then working as a teamster in a lumber yard. The 1906 City Directory shows the family at 317 Sycamore Street. By 1910 Frank Sapp's sister Nellie had married James Curran. Frank Sapp, his parents and sister Eva lived with the Currans at 707 Walnut Street. The Sapp family had moved to 206 Walnut Street by the summer of 1913. When he registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 Frank G. Sapp had married Anna Mary Goldy. He was then working as a pipefitter for the Public Service Gas Company. Frank G. Sapp was living with his wife and child at 742 Walnut Street. He was still at that address in the latter half of 1918. The
1920 Census shows Frank and Anna Sapp at 1016
South
8th Street with their daughters Beulah and Nellie. He was
then working as a wharf builder. Frank G. Sapp was appointed to
the Camden Fire Department in 1921. |
By the time the 1927 City Directory was compiled, the Sapp family had moved to 804 Pine Street. The 1930 census lists five children still at home, Nellie, Ruth, Franklin, Anna, and Katherine. Another son, Nelson Gaunt Sapp, was born in July of 1932. Still a resident of 804 Pine Street, Frank G. Sapp was found dead in his bed at the firehouse where he had been stationed on May 18, 1935. It was assumed at the time that he had died of heart disease. He was buried at New Camden Cemetery. His wife joined him in 1973. |
