DR. DAVID E. COOPER was born in Russia in 1885. He came to America in 1904 by way of Ellis Island. He came to Philadelphia, and, in the words of his son Joe Cooper, "worked, saved his money, and began taking high school courses at night and during the summers in all of the academic subjects, passing the final examinations for his high school diploma. He then applied and entered the dental school of Medico Chirurgical located at Cherry Street, Philadelphia, graduated in the Class of 1916 and then became an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania by the fact that on the year he graduated from Medico Chi, the school became the graduate school of medicine of the University of Pennsylvania." Dr. Cooper married Sadie Goldstein of Camden NJ in 1917, the daughter of Solomon Joseph and Rose Zuckerman Goldstein. The Coopers made their home with the Goldsteins, at 1439 Broadway in Camden, and after 1920 at 1425 Broadway. After passing the Dental Board of Examination tests in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, he began practicing dentistry in 1917. Dr. Cooper first established an office at the corner of Broadway and Walnut Street. By 1922 he had moved the practice to 1148 Broadway. He moved the office to 1150 Broadway around 1926, and to 1152 Broadway by 1931, and moved his family to 1574 Bradley Avenue in Parkside. Dr. Cooper also set up offices in Maple Shade, Blackwood, and Williamstown NJ. By 1940 Dr. Cooper had purchased a home at 919 Broadway that had originally been built in 1840 for a relative of Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story. Dr. Cooper would practice at that address until he passed away in 1947. He was buried at Crescent Burial Park in Pennsauken NJ, later joined by his wife. Dr. Cooper was active, with his brothers-in-law Hyman and Leopold, in Camden Lodge No. 915, Independent Order of B'nai B'rith. He served as vice-president of the Camden Chapter in 1927 and 1928. Dr. Cooper was survived by his wife, sons Joseph & Bernard Z. Cooper, and brothers-in-law Dr. Hyman, dr. leopold, and Dr. Henry Goldstein. |

"Out front is a young African American individual that was employed, first by my father who trained him into keeping the office clean and educated him on the proper methods to clean and sterilize instruments using the technology of the period. The individual was John Cephas, and he lived in Camden, when in the office he wore a white jacket. He also helped out in the house where he did various chores. When John was first employed he was about 17 or 18 years of age, and was with us for about three years. John may have been drafted into the army during the first part of WWII."- Joseph Cooper
