Corporal Albert R. Luzi was born to Frank and Ernestina Luzi of Camden, NJ on September 26, 1921. He lived at 625 Spruce Street in Camden with his parents and brothers Arthur, Frank, and Carl, next door to Joseph Becker and his family, who lived at 623 Spruce Street, and Worthington Betts, who lived at 634 Spruce Street. A star baseball and basketball player while at Camden High School, he played baseball for the Camden Collegians and the Venetian Collegians after he graduated. Prior to entering the Marines, he worked for RCA. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 10, 1942.

Corporal Luzi was killed in action on Iwo Jima on February 28, 1945. His remains were brought home after the war, and he was buried at New Camden Cemetery in Camden, NJ in April of 1948. He rests alongside his parents. A niece, Alberta Luzi, was named for him.

Al Bass’ Camden High tossers practically eliminated Coach Nello Dalollio’s Vineland High outfit from whatever chance it had of capturing the Camden Suburban League baseball championship when they defeated the Cumberland county aggregation at Farnham Park by the score of 5 to 4.

This game wound up the schedules for both teams, with Vineland resting in third place with six wins out of nine starts, and Camden in fifth place with five out of nine. Woodbury, with still two games on its slate, is in first place with Haddon Heights in the runner-up slot.

In another fracas, Haddon Heights easily defeated Millville at the latter’s field, 13 to 4, to climb into undisputed possession of second place. One other game was played with Bridgeton winding up its campaign by taking the measure of Haddonfield at the latter’s diamond by the score of 5 to 1. It was Bridgeton’s third win of the season and the eighth straight defeat for the “Haddons.”

Camden won out over Vineland by staging a two-run rally in the ninth inning with one down after the losers had gone ahead by tallying a single run in their half of the same round.

“Cappy” Roman started the ninth frame for Camden by working DiDomenico for a pass and went to second on DeServio’s sacrifice. Boulton then lined a double to left-center to score Roman with the tying run and came home with the winning marker on Martin’s two-bagger.

For seven innings Camden trailed Vineland 3 to 0 but in the eighth it pushed across three runs to tie the score.

Al Luzi hurled the major portion of the game for Camden and was rapped for an even dozen hits, fanning nine and walked three, while Martin fanned two in his brief stay on the hill. DiDomenico went the route for Vineland and also was touched for 12 blows. Chielli and Genther sparkled at the plate for Vineland with four and three hits respectively, while Bubien with three for four starred for Camden.
