James L. Baxter

PRIVATE FIRST CLASS JAMES L. BAXTER was born December 14, 1924 to to James L. and Lillian F. Baxter, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The elder Baxter was a lawyer, and veteran of WWI, serving with the Air Corps. The Baxter family moved to Haddonfield after the birth of their third child, daughter Jean, in 1927. The family made their home at 264 Jefferson Avenue in Haddonfield NJ. On the next block, Mountwell Avenue, lived Charles Armstrong, and James Baker lived around the corner on Chews Landing Road. All three would give their lives while serving in America's armed forces.

James Baxter attended Haddonfield High School, and graduated from Moorestown Friends School in 1943. He was drafted in June of 1943, and sent to England in June of 1944. News accounts of the time have him serving with an armored infantry unit.

James Baxter was killed in action while serving with U.S. Army ground forces on July 15, 1944. He was survived by his parents, and sisters Jean and Lillian S. Baxter. After the war, his body was brought home, and he was buried at Beverly National Cemetery on May 14, 1948.
