GANT STREET was a short street that ran from Knight Street east to 1235 South 2nd Street, between Liberty and Mechanic Streets. No houses are listed on Gant Street in the 1924 City Directory or any later Directory. It is quite likely that no buildings ever had a Gant Street address at all. The street probably dated back to at least the 1880s, as there were homes in the 1200 block of Knight Street as early as 1887 Oddly enough, what was Gant Street now appears on Internet mapping services as Camac Street. A Camac Street is listed in the 1906 and 1914 Directories as running from the "Delaware River to South 2nd Street Below Kaighn Avenue" and appears on pre-World-War I maps. This street is not, however, listed in directories published after 1920 and is not Gant Street, which was listed in the City Directories both before World War I and through 1947, when the last directory was published. It appears that someone at Google has not done their homework! |
Do you have a Gant Street memory or picture. Let me know by e-mail so it can be included here. Phil Cohen |
