Giacomo's

The corner of Mount Ephraim Avenue and Van Hook Street has been home to a bar since at least 1918, when the address was operated by George Jones. By 1920 the establishment was known as Purdy’s Cafe, and by 1934 it had been taken over by John (Johnnie) Driscoll, who operated it as Johnnie’s Cafe.

By 1939 the bar was operated by Henry Knauer, who ran Knauer’s Cafe at this address. In the 1950s and early 1960s, the address housed Hubert’s Cafe, and another Hubert’s Cafe was located on Jackson Street.

By the late 1970s the address was home to Giacomo’s, which remained in operation through the late 1990s. The photograph below was taken in October 2003.
