Police Hunting For Robber Find A Suspect Up A Tree
Philadelphia Inquirer –
By John Way Jennings, Inquirer Staff Writer
A 26-year-old man accused of robbing a gas-station attendant in Collingswood was chased on foot into Camden and captured after he climbed a tree to elude police, authorities said.
Byron M. Lewison of the 2400 block of Wainwright Street in Camden was arrested Tuesday night by Collingswood and Camden police when he came down from his perch behind the Ferry Avenue Apartments in the 1400 block of Dayton Street.
Lewison was charged with armed robbery and illegal possession of a knife and was being held in the Camden County Correctional Facility pending a preliminary hearing, with bail set at $25,000.
Collingswood Detective Frank Woshnak said Lewison entered the office of a Citgo gas station at Route 130 North and the Collingswood Circle shortly before 8 p.m., pulled a knife on attendant Adam Motyk, 30, and forced him to turn over $250. He then locked Motyk in a room at the rear of the office and fled. Motyk forced open the door a few minutes later and called police from a nearby store.
Collingswood Patrolman Chip Leyendecker spotted the suspect running nearby, behind the Teamsters Union Hall on Route 130. He notified the dispatcher, and Sgt. Frank Pierce of the PATCO security department saw Lewison near the Ferry Avenue Station of the PATCO High-Speed Line.
Leyendecker joined Pierce, and the pair chased Lewison into Camden, where they were joined by Patrolman Carlos Vega. Police chased — and lost — the suspect several times during the 20-minute chase, which covered nearly a mile.
He had gone out of sight near the Ferry Station Apartments, but an unidentified citizen came forward and told police that a man had just climbed a tree in the rear of the apartments.
Police saw Lewison hiding about 30 feet up in the tree. The officers drew their handguns and ordered him to come down. He was arrested without a struggle.
Police said the money taken in the robbery was recovered on Lewison. A knife believed to have been used in the robbery was found a short distance from the gas station.
