Introduction
Spring Street existed in Camden as early as 1850. By 1891 the street had been mapped out to run north and south from Clinton Street, between Second Street and Front Street in South Camden. It was intended to go as far south as Walnut Street, but appears to have been interrupted by Volney Bennett’s lumber yard at Pine Street. The 1906 Sanborn Map does show a block of Spring Street between Spruce and Cherry Streets within the confines of the lumber yard.
Besides the Bennett lumberyard, at least one other industrial building was sited on Spring Street, the S.P. Wright Ink Factory. This complex was located on Spring Street between Clinton and Line Streets. It had closed by 1906, at which time there was talk about converting the plant into a morocco leather factory. Closer to Pine Street, the Henry F. Horsman & Sons teamster business was active in the 1890s. The family lived on Spring Street during these years as well, and after moving away, came back in the mid-1900s.
By 1891 a few frame dwellings had been built just north of Pine Street, two of which were still standing as late as 1928.
During these years a few families lived on Spring Street for a good number of years, but for the most part City Directories indicate that people came and went after a year or so. An interesting point is that more than a few households occupied two or three addresses at different times. There were a few extended families who spent time on Spring Street as well.
By 1947 the residential buildings were long gone, and Spring Street was literally erased after World War II. No physical signs of Spring Street remain.

697 Spring Street
The Carrs moved to 705 Spring Street in 1907. Edward Horsman died from tuberculosis in February of 1909. He was buried at New Camden Cemetery on February 6, 1909.
701 Spring Street — The Horsman Family
Katie Horsman Meade’s husband Harry died from heart trouble in May of 1900 and was buried in the Horsman family plot at New Camden Cemetery on May 30. By 1903 she had remarried and was living with her children and husband, Frederick Malson at 697 Spring Street.
Little Girl Frightfully Burned

While playing about a bonfire yesterday Mildred Finger, aged 5 years, of 697 Spring street, Camden, came in contact with the blaze. In a second her clothing was a mass of flames, and she was frightfully burned from head to foot She was taken to the Cooper Hospital, where it was stated she will probably die.

Garret Miller, residing at 703 Spring street, filled a stove-pipe with old rags, and on Saturday morning last, at about five o'clock, these took fire and brought out the fire department. The fire was extinguished after a damage of about $25 was sustained.

Accused of speeding and further charged with operating a car without a driver’s license, S. B. Fletcher, aged 31 years, a manufacturer at Radnor, Pa., was arrested yesterday on Haddon avenue by Motorcycle Policeman Frost. He posted $55 as security for his appearance before Recorder Stackhouse this morning.
Arrested on suspicion of having stolen $12 which Wyata Weber, of Seventh street and Kaighn avenue, missed from the till in her store, Pearl Warren, aged 18, said she only took $9.50. She will be given a hearing today by Recorder Stackhouse.
Falling from a step ladder, David Baker, aged 51 years, of 705 Spring street, dislocated his left shoulder. He was taken to Cooper Hospital.
Baby Covered With Sores & Scales

Could Not Tell What She Looked Like. Got Worse with Doctor’s Medicine. Could Not Sleep From Intense Itching.
When my baby was four months old her skin broke out, and I thought it was ringworm. I took her to a doctor and he said it was Eczema. He gave me medicine to give her, but she kept getting worse all the time, and you could not tell what she looked like, her little face and hands were so covered with sores and large scales. It got under her little finger nails. She was the worst looking sight I ever saw. I heard of Cuticura Remedies, so I thought I would try them. Before I tried them we got no rest at night. She could not sleep it itched so. After I gave her Cuticura Resolvent, I saw a change in a week. It commenced to dry all up and she would sleep all night, and when it was drying up the skin all cracked open, so then I got Cuticura (ointment) and Cuticura Soap, and in one month she had not one sore on her face, and I don’t think it is any more than justice to let you know what it has done for my baby. She now is fifteen months old and has got beautiful skin. She doesn’t even have a pimple of any kind, and she is as fat as pudding.
