A Quarrel Between Two Colored Youths Ends in a Killing
A shooting occurred near Kaighn Avenue and Sycamore Street in Camden following a quarrel. John Hill shot a young man from ambush.
Hill had previously been implicated in the drowning of 14-year-old Perry Jordan in the summer of 1891, and had attempted to kill bar-owner Daniel F. Hurley three weeks before this shooting.
Hill unsuccessfully attempted to implicate his employers — William M. Butts, John Foster, and C. Henry Peters — in the murder. They were acquitted.
Hill was tried, convicted, and executed in April 1893. Other persons mentioned in connection with the case include Joseph Dodson, James Evans, George Hanson, Marwood Derrickson, Alfred Reed, Ida Fisher, Laura LeCount, and Edward E. Jefferis.
