Technical Sergeant William N. Wolfert Jr. was born on August 20, 1914, in Pennsylvania, to William and Laura Wolfert. He was the oldest of three children. By 1930 the family was living at 208 East Collingswood Avenue, not far from Newton Lake Park, and his father was in the gasoline business. He had attended Collingswood High School, as a member of the class of 1935. He entered the Army in 1941, and trained at Fort Dix, NJ and Fort Bragg, NC. Assigned to the 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, he saw action in North Africa and Sicily under General George Patton. William N. Wolfert was killed in action in fighting near St. Lô on July 19, 1944. He was survived by his parents, a younger brother, Corporal George Wolfert, who was serving in the Hawaiian Islands, and a sister Virginia. His last stateside address was 101 Curtis Avenue, Collingswood, NJ. After the war, William Wolfert was brought home to New Jersey and buried at Locustwood Cemetery in what is now Cherry Hill, NJ, where he rests next to his mother, Laura Wolfert.

Services for Sgt. William N. Wolfert, son of William and Laura Wolfert, 35 East Zane avenue, Collingswood, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home at 402 White Horse pike, Haddon Heights, where friends may call tomorrow night. Burial with military honors by Tatem-Shields, post 17, American Legion, will be in Locustwood Memorial park. Sergeant Wolfert served with the 39th Infantry, Ninth Division, and was killed July 19, 1944, in the Battle of St. Lo. Also surviving are a sister, Virginia, at home, and a brother, George, Haddon Heights.
