William J. Montague Jr.
Private First Class William J. Montague Jr. was born in April of 1919 to William and Elva Montague. In 1920 the Montagues lived at 1133 North 32nd Street in the Cramer Hill section of Camden NJ. By 1930 his mother had remarried to George Whaley, and with sisters Anna and Elva the family lived at 9357 Westfield Avenue. He attended school in Pennsauken NJ, graduating from the Pennsauken Junior High School. After leaving school and going to work for the Kieckhefer Container Company at their box factory in the Delair section of Pennsauken NJ, William Montague Jr. moved to 1135 Beideman Avenue in the same Cramer Hill neighborhood where he had spent his early years. After he received notification to report for active duty, he married Miss Alice Watson of Union Avenue in Pennsauken on June 5, 1942. He left for the Army four days later.
After reporting for active duty, Private Montague was sent to Camp Gordon GA where he served as a cook prior to being sent to Hawaii as a member of the 3007th Ordnance Company. He was reported as missing in the South Pacific on November 1, 1943.
William J. Montague Jr. was survived by his wife, Alice Watson Montague, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Whaley of 2800 Raritan Avenue in Pennsauken NJ, and his sisters.
