Private William J. Burke was born in West Berlin, New Jersey on June 8, 1893. He was the son of Michael and Mary Burke, of 710 North 6th Street, in Camden NJ. His father managed a restaurant. William Burke was living with his parents at the North 6th Street address when he registered for the draft in June of 1917. He was inducted into the United States Army at Camden on May 27, 1918.
After initial training at Camp Dix, Private Burke was assigned to Company H, 16th Battalion, United States Guards on July 31, 1918. He died of spinal meningitis following an attack of Spanish Influenza on October 23, 1918 at the United States Army Hospital No 3, Colonia NJ.
William Burke was brought home, and he was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Delaware Township (present-day Cherry Hill) NJ. He was survived by his parents, brothers Edward, Harry, and Joseph, and twin sisters Estella and Marie.
