William G. Erdwein was born on September 14, 1893 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Gottlieb and Sophia Erdwein. His father was a baker. His mother died during the 1910s. By the time the 1910 Census was taken his father had remarried. By 1914 William Erdwein had learned the paperhanger’s trade, and had married and moved to Camden, New Jersey.

William Erdwein was living with his wife May at 934 Fern Street in North Camden when the 1914 City Directory was compiled. When he registered for the draft in June of 1917, William G. Erdwein was living at 924 Linden Street. He was called up in November and sent to Camp Dix, where he underwent infantry training. Private Erdwein was sent overseas in March of 1918 and assigned to Company H, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division in May.

Private William Erdwein was killed in action on July 20, 1918. His father, Gottlieb Erdwein, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was notified of his death. In 1930 his step-mother, Mary Erdwein, was invited to take part in the Mother’s Pilgrimage to visit the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery in France. She chose not to take the trip.
