Private William F. Donehower, 27, was born in Pleasantville, NJ, in 1917. He graduated from Pleasantville High School and attended college for one year. His father, Charles Donehower, was a well-known architect with an office in Camden, NJ. William Donehower worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard prior to entering the Army in January of 1944. He went overseas in July of that year. He was separated from his wife, with dependents, when he entered service. The family resided at 238 Virginia Avenue in Westmont (Haddon Township), NJ.
Private Donehower served with Company C, 397th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division. Also serving with that unit was Technical Sergeant William Smerhovsky of Camden, NJ. Sergeant Smerhovsky was killed in action on November 22, 1944, during the capture of Senones, France.
Private William F. Donehower was killed in action on December 4, 1944, during the assault on Wingen, France. He is buried at Lorraine American Cemetery in St. Avold, France.
