Introduction
William Wieland was born in Pennsylvania in 1914. The family had moved to New Jersey by 1924. In 1930 he lived with his parents, Frederick and Catherine Wieland, at 20 Palmetto Avenue in Clementon, NJ. His father, a World War I veteran, worked as a shipping clerk. William Wieland worked as a caddy at the nearby Pine Valley Golf Course. The family also included a daughter, Margaret, and a brother, Frederick Jr.
William Wieland enlisted in the United States Army in 1936. He was posted to the Philippines, and was serving in Bataan when it fell. On July 5, 1943, the Camden Courier-Post reported that word had been released that Private Wieland had been taken prisoner by the Japanese. William Wieland died while serving the United States of America. He is remembered on the war memorial in Clementon, NJ. The Wieland family later moved to Stratford, NJ.
