Sergeant First Class William A. Scott Jr. was born on December 28, 1928 in West Virginia to William and Lenora Scott. He was the third child, coming after sisters Nettie L. and Florence Scott. The family was living in Fayetteville, VA in April of 1930, in a small unincorporated town known as Cunard.
The Scott family came north and settled in Camden, NJ by the 1940s. William A. Scott Jr. attended Camden High School. He joined the United States Army in 1947. At that time his family was living at 1884 South 10th Street, in Camden’s Centerville section.
William A. Scott Jr. had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant by the summer of 1953. He was then serving with the 7th Infantry Division in North Korea when on July 8 he was wounded by a rocket. After a brief hospitalization he returned to duty on August 12. His Military Occupational Specialty at that time was 01745 Light Weapons Infantry Leader.
A career soldier, William A. Scott Jr. had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class by 1967. His Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) is listed as 11F4P Infantry Operations and Intelligence Specialist.
Sergeant Scott began his tour of duty on April 24, 1967. He was serving with Headquarters Company, Fourth Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade, when he was killed in action by small arms fire in Kontum Province, Vietnam, on July 10, 1967.
Sergeant First Class Scott was brought home and buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly, NJ on July 21, 1967. He was survived by his wife, Pearl Scott, his parents, who had moved to Magnolia, NJ, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be tomorrow for Army SFC William A. Scott Jr. of 501 Ashland Avenue, Magnolia, killed July 10 in Vietnam.
Sgt. Scott, 38, attended Camden High School and has been in the Army since 1947. He had been in Vietnam with the 173d Airborne Brigade since late April.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Scott Sr. of Magnolia, and two sisters.
Services under the direction of the Carl Maxey Funeral Home, 831 Van Hook Street, will be at 8 p.m. in the 10th Street Baptist Church, 10th Street and Ferry Avenue, where friends may call after 6 p.m. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Beverly.
