Dr. Mengel Dies of Heart Attack

Camden Courier-Post — January 28, 1943

Dr. Mengel obituary, part 1 — Dr. Willard C. Mengel, 66-year-old eye specialist who practiced in Camden for 20 years, collapsed from a heart attack in the Camden Trust Company bank lobby on January 27, 1943. He maintained his home and office at 400 Penn Street, Camden.

Dr. Mengel was born in Treverton, Pennsylvania, where his father, S. Mengel, practiced medicine. He graduated from Albright College in 1917 and from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1921. After taking a post-graduate course in 1922, he moved to Camden to begin his practice.

He served as assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine and published numerous articles on eye diseases. Dr. Mengel was an associate surgeon at Willis Hospital and ophthalmologist at Camden County General Hospital.

He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and a member of various medical societies. Dr. Mengel was survived by his widow and a sister. He was buried in Locustwood Cemetery, Shamokin, Pennsylvania.
