Biography
Private First Class Walter B. Hires was the son of Paul and Henrietta Bossert Hires. Born in 1923, he was raised in Haddonfield, New Jersey. In 1930 his father was working as a restaurant manager, having previously worked as a purchasing agent for a shipyard. The Hires family lived at 9 Chestnut Street in Haddonfield, the home of Henrietta’s mother, Susan E. Bossert. He was a graduate of Haddonfield High School and had attended Camden Commercial College. He was active in Boy Scouting and was the assistant troop leader of Boy Scout Troop 51.
Walter Hires was inducted into the United States Army. While in the Army, he was assigned to the Air Corps and had trained as an aerial photographer, and was stationed at Lowry Field, Colorado. He was taken ill on April 16, 1944, and died after a lengthy illness at the Fitzsimmons General Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Walter Hires was 21 years old at the time of his death. His death was reported in the Camden Courier-Post August 30, 1944 edition. On September 2, 1944, his obituary was printed in the Camden Courier-Post. Memorial services were held that day by American Legion Post 38 of Haddonfield, New Jersey, at a funeral home at 8 Kings Highway West in Haddonfield, led by the Reverend Doctor Ramon Kistler of Haddonfield Presbyterian Church.
