Introduction
Master Sergeant Thomas S. H. Walker Jr., born in 1912 in New Jersey, was the son of Thomas and Sarah Walker. His father owned a laundry, and the family lived during his high school years at 112 East Madison Street in Collingswood, New Jersey. He attended Collingswood High School as a member of the class of 1928. After high school he worked for his father until at least the spring of 1930. The Walkers later lived at 59 East 2nd Street in Moorestown, New Jersey, and at the outbreak of hostilities in 1939, Thomas Walker was living and working in New York City, where he was an interior decorator. He had at this time completed two years of college.
Thomas Walker entered the Army on March 26, 1942 at Camp Upton, Yaphank, New York. He advanced rapidly, and was ranked as a Master Sergeant. According to an article in the Camden Courier-Post, he had seen action in North Africa. He was aboard the HMTS Rohna with a unit of infantrymen who were on their way to the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations as infantry replacements when the Rohna was sunk on November 26, 1943.
