Thomas G. Tolbert
Private First Class Thomas G. Tolbert was 19 years old and lived at 5709 Westfield Avenue in Pennsauken, NJ. He was a graduate of Merchantville High School, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Merchantville, and had attended Auburn College in Alabama before joining the Army. He died on October 12, 1947, from burns suffered in an explosion while destroying ammunition at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was buried at Beverly National Cemetery on October 17, 1947, where he lies next to his father, Thomas G. Tolbert, a builder and real estate operator who passed away on May 3, 1942. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Elsie Tolbert, and a sister, Mrs. Betty Alspach of Marlton.

Details of how Pfc. Thomas G. Tolbert, 19, of 5709 Westfield avenue, Pennsauken, suffered fatal injuries last week were learned last night by his mother, Mrs. Elsie Tolbert.
Army authorities disclosed Tolbert was burned with two other members of a detail destroying ammunition 30 miles from Ft. Benning, Ga., where he has been stationed. He died Sunday.
The burns were suffered by the soldiers when TNT flared as the three were pouring the explosive by hand on ammunition being burned in a trench, the authorities said. His companions, whose names were not disclosed, are reported in serious condition in Ft. Benning hospital.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday for Tolbert at the Westfield avenue address. Burial will be in National cemetery, Beverly.
Tolbert was a graduate of Merchantville High school, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Merchantville, and had attended Auburn college, Ala., before joining the army 13 months ago.
He is survived also by a sister, Mrs. Betty Alspach, Marlton. His father was the late Thomas G. Tolbert, builder and real estate operator. Mrs. Tolbert has carried on the business since her husband’s death.
