Robert Nel Carter

Sergeant Robert Nel Carter was born on August 7, 1947. His home of record was Camden, New Jersey.

Sergeant Carter’s tour of duty in Vietnam began on October 4, 1967. Serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment, 198th Light Infantry Brigade, Sergeant Carter was killed in action by multiple fragmentation wounds, possibly from the explosion of a mine, on February 9, 1968 in Quang Tin Province, Vietnam, during the Tet offensive.

Sergeant Robert Nel Carter is buried at Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, New Jersey — Section V, Site 0363.

Robert Nel Carter is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Panel 38E, Row 46.

Bob Carter was my platoon sergeant. He was the go-to guy when things had to be done. You could always count on him to do the right thing. He would have achieved a lot in life because of his attitude. Him, Rocco Pannicia and me were running the point during the 68 TET. There was an explosion and I was told later that it was a claymore set up on our flank. Rocco and I were wounded, Sgt Carter was killed. I think about him often and know that we would have been lifelong friends.
