Private Robert H. Carr was born March 25, 1890 in Woodbury NJ to Robert W. and Clementine Carr. His early years were spent in Woodbury, where the family lived in 1900, at 47 Walnut Street. The elder Carr worked as a teamster then, and later in construction. Robert H. Carr was still living with his parents in 1910. He was then working as a laborer doing cement work.

During the 1910s Robert H. Carr served in the United States Army for 14 months prior to being discharged, as a sergeant, in the years before America became involved in World War I. By 1917 he had married, and lived with wife Mary at 222 Amber Street, just south of Kaighn Avenue, in Camden NJ. When he registered for the draft on June 12, 1918 Robert Carr was working as a driver for the Joseph Campbell Company, best known as Campbell Soup. He was quickly called to service and was sent to Camp Dix NJ, where he was assigned to Company H of the 347th Infantry Regiment.

Private Robert H. Carr died from pneumonia in France on October 18, 1918. He was survived by his wife.
