Robert E. Meggett was the son of William J. and Mamie D. Meggett. The family lived at 423 Trenton Avenue in Camden NJ, where William Meggett worked as a foreman in one of Camden’s shipyards.

Robert Meggett enlisted into the United States Army on August 8, 1918, and was sent to Fort Slocum NY. He was the last enlisted man to leave Camden. After that date all enlistments were cancelled by the government, and all men were drafted. He was transferred to Camp Humphreys VA in October of 1918 and contracted a severe cold enroute, which resulted in influenza developing. He died at Camp Humphreys of Spanish influenza on October 16, 1918.

Private Meggett was 19 years old at the time of his death. He was survived by his parents, of the Trenton Avenue address. After services at the Trenton Avenue address, he was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Camden. William Meggett passed away in the 1920s. Mamie Meggett was still living in the neighborhood in April of 1930.
