Seaman First Class Robert Edward Hearn was born on April 20, 1921. He was the oldest child of Charles E. and Laura Hearn. Charles Hearn worked as a fireman on the railroad, and the family owned a home at 204 Milton Street in the Poet’s Row section of North Camden, in Camden NJ. The house was a stone’s throw from the Delaware River. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden in February of 1940.
Robert Hearn joined the United States Navy on July 4, 1942. By August of that year, the 200 block of Milton Street had sent fourteen of its sons off to war. Besides Robert Hearn, two others did not return home, William Henry Merryfield and Wilbert Epley.
He was killed in action on January 17, 1944 at Cape Gloucester on the island of New Britain, in the Pacific Theater of Operations. His parents were notified of his death on February 28, 1944. His death was reported in the March 20, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. Robert Hearn was survived by his parents, sisters Grace, Jane, and Bertha Hearn, and a brother, Glenwood D. Hearn, all of the Milton Street address.
Robert Hearn was returned home aboard the USAT George W.G. Boyce in 1948. He was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in Beverly NJ on June 24, 1948.

Neighbors Plan to Hang Up Service Flag Saturday Night with Mayor and Other Officials Attending Patriotic Party
There are 14 of them from the one short block of Milton street — known, only Mechanic street in Camden, between Ninth and Tenth, as anywhere else for the percentage of enlistment, per block. Neighbors plan to hang out a service flag for the “boys,” John Davis, of 221 Milton street, said last night. “So we are going to do the same thing Saturday night at 7 o’clock. Right across the street. An all-weather flag with a star for each man.”
Tec Sgt. Clifford Bush, John Hearn, William Studinger, William Reed, Harry Cohen, Wilbert Epley, Robert Zastamplie, Robert Hearn, Peter Zastamplie, Henry Glick, Julius Nec and Raymond D. Rizley, all of whom are in the Army.
In the Navy are Seamen William Merryfield and Edward Hearn.

Seaman 1/c Robert Edward Hearn, 22, of 204 Milton street, who was killed in action at Cape Gloucester, New Britain Island, on Jan. 17, 1944, will be buried Thursday with military honors.
Services will be held at 12.30 p. m. in the funeral home at 804 North Twenty-seventh street, where friends may call Wednesday night. Burial will be in Beverly National cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Camden Post 980, VFW, and a detail from Fort Dix.
Seaman Hearn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Hearn, joined the Navy on July 4, 1942. He was a member of the North Baptist Church, and was a 1940 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High school. He was a member of the championship soccer team of the school during the seasons of 1938 and 1939.
Besides his parents, Seaman Hearn is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Taylor, and Mrs. Charles Jackson, both of Camden, and Mrs. Earl A. Clark, of Westmont, and two brothers, Glenwood and Albert L. Hearn, both of Camden.
