Biography
Second Lieutenant Robert C. Besselman was born in 1924 in Massachusetts to Leo A. and Caroline Besselman. Leo Besselman was the superintendent at an oil refinery. In 1930 the family lived at 22 Glenmore Avenue in Braintree, Massachusetts. The family moved to Haddonfield, New Jersey sometime in the 1930s. Robert Besselman attended St. Rose of Lima school and graduated as an honor student from Haddonfield High School. After high school, his parents moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey. Robert stayed in the area and worked for the Cities Service Oil Company at Petty’s Island, Camden, New Jersey. After entering the Army, he qualified to train as a bomber pilot.
Second Lieutenant Besselman was killed in December of 1944 when the B-26 bomber that he was piloting crashed near Del Rio, Texas. He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo G. Besselman of Elizabeth, New Jersey; three brothers, Wayne L., Eugene H., and PFC George H. Besselman; and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Williams.
