Sergeant Richard S. Ivory was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. and Rose Mary Ivory. Sadly, Rose Mary Ivory passed away in 1932. John Ivory remarried, and by the mid-1930s the Ivory family lived at 33 North 33rd Street in Camden. Richard S. Ivory was reported in the October 15, 1936 Camden Courier-Post’s list of hospital cases as having been treated at West Jersey Hospital for lacerations of the scalp.

The Ivory family apparently moved out of Camden at some time after this event. Richard S. Ivory graduated from Haddon Heights (NJ) High School and worked at the RCA plant in Camden NJ prior to being inducted into the Army in February of 1943. He qualified for flight duty, and trained as a flight engineer and top turret gunner in a heavy bomber crew. He was sent overseas in May of 1943.

Richard Ivory was assigned to the 492nd Bomber Squadron of the 7th Bomber Group, Heavy, and served in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. He was lost on August 13, 1944, and his death was reported in the October 24, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. He was survived by his father John W. Ivory of 114 South Haviland Avenue, Audubon NJ, a sister, Rosemary, and a brother, John W. Ivory Jr., who was serving in the Navy at the time. He was 20 at the time of his death.

John W. Ivory Jr. passed away in February of 2004.

Richard S. Ivory is held in memory by his niece, Debra Riggins, who aided in the creation of this page.
