Private First Class Richard J. Thorpe, of 2300 Broadway in Camden NJ, was killed in action while serving with the 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, on December 20, 1944 in Luxembourg.
Richard J. Thorpe was born in Massachusetts in 1919. He had two years of high school and was living in Windham County, Connecticut when he enlisted in the United States Army Reserves for one year on September 18, 1940 in New York City. He was single at the time of his enlistment. Thorpe subsequently completed his term of service and moved to Camden, where he found work at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation shipyards, across the street from his home at 2300 Broadway. He was later called back to active duty and assigned to the 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division.
