Raymond C. Brown

Private Raymond Charles Brown was born August 27, 1912 to William H. and Nellie May Brown. Raised in Camden NJ, he had attended Sewell, Camden Junior High School #1, and Camden High School. After leaving school, he worked with his father at a yarn mill, he also worked for the J.S. Reid Company in Camden. He had grown up at 710 North 9th Street in Camden NJ prior to entering the United States Army on August 26, 1943, a home his parents had owned since at least 1920. The oldest of three children, he had two sisters, Dorothy May and Naomi.

Private Brown trained at Camp Van Dorn LA and Camp Breckenridge KY before he was sent overseas. He was killed in action in France on July 15, 1944. 31 years old at the time of his death, he was survived by his mother, Nellie Brown, of the 9th Street address, and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Mathis and Mrs. Naomi Lighthiser, both of Camden. His death was reported in the September 19, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post.

Private Brown was buried at Arlington Cemetery in Pennsauken, NJ, with military rites on a Saturday in 1948. The body lay in state at Epiphany Lutheran Church, Seventh and Market Streets, from noon until 2 p.m., with a guard of honor and firing squad from Camden Post 980, VFW.
