Biography
Ole Daniel Johnson
Ole Daniel Johnson was a machinist’s mate living on First Avenue in West Berlin, New Jersey. Before his naval service, he had worked as a power engineer at a plant in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and for the Potomac Power and Electric Company in Washington, D.C.
Johnson first enlisted in the Navy on August 22, 1932, and served four years. He re-enlisted in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was discharged at San Diego, California on August 18, 1938. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve on May 14, 1941. His last home leave was June 9, 1942. In November of 1942, Johnson wrote his wife that he had been recommended for promotion to lieutenant junior grade.
Johnson was reported missing in action on December 31, 1942, with the sinking of the cargo ship USS Alchiba AK-23 in the South Pacific. His wife Ann, living on First Avenue in West Berlin, received the missing-in-action notification on December 15 from Rear Admiral Jacobs. Johnson was officially declared dead on the casualty list published March 24, 1944.

Navy Notifies Wife of Ole Daniel Johnson of His Death
Ole Daniel Johnson, Navy machinist’s mate, of West Berlin, who was reported missing in action Dec. 31, last night was officially listed by the Navy Department in casualties as dead.
His wife, Ann, received that message.
Johnson was first reported missing with the sinking of a cargo ship in the South Pacific. His wife, who lives on First avenue, West Berlin, received that message Dec. 15 from Rear Admiral Jacobs.
Johnson was a former power engineer at New Castle, Pa., and for the Potomac Power and Electric Company, Washington, before enlisting in the Navy on Aug. 22, 1932. He served four years. He reenlisted in Cincinnati for two years. He was discharged at San Diego, Cal., on Aug. 18, 1938.
He enlisted in the Naval Reserves on May 14, 1941. He wrote his wife last November that he had been recommended for lieutenant junior grade. He was last home on June 9.
