Private Nicolo Fanello was born in Salandra, Basilicata, in southern Italy on August 2, 1892.

When he registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, Nicola Fanello was living at 217 Royden Street in South Camden. He was then employed by the Victor Talking Machine Company. He married shortly afterwards, and lived with his wife Mary at 1107 South 4th Street in Camden.

Nicola Fanello was drafted on April 26, 1918, and sent to Camp Dix, where he became a member of Company E, 310th Infantry Regiment. He went overseas with his unit in the spring of 1918, arriving in France in May.

Private Fanello was killed during a gas attack in the Argonne Forest on September 17, 1918. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Fanello, of the South 4th Street address.
