Private Louis J. Pomponio
Private Louis J. Pomponio was born Luigi Pomponio in San Biagio Saracinisco, Frosinone, Italy in September 1921. He was the son of Emilio Pomponio and his wife, the former Rosa Maria Grazia Valenti. He emigrated with his parents to America in 1923. By 1930 Emilio Pomponio was working as a musician in Philadelphia, where the family lived at 521 Montrose Street in South Philadelphia. By 1930 his brother Daniel and sister Rosella had been born; another sister, Mary, had died as a young child. The Pomponio family moved to Taunton Avenue in Berlin, NJ at some point in the 1930s. He attended the Camden County Vocational School on Browning Road in Pennsauken, NJ, and graduated in 1939. Louis Pomponio was an amateur radio operator, and parlayed his hobby into a job at RCA-Victor in Camden, NJ before being inducted into the Army in 1943.
Private Pomponio received his initial training at Fort Dix, NJ and Fort Blanding, FL. The Army assigned him to a Signal Corps unit for further training in mid-December 1943 at Camp Crowder, MO. He had been there for six weeks when he was taken ill and passed away on February 17, 1944. He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emilio Pomponio of Berlin, NJ, and his brother and sister. His death was reported in the February 21 and February 22, 1944 evening editions of the Camden Courier-Post.

Whose funeral will be held Thursday at 9 a. m. in the residence of his parents, Taunton avenue, Berlin. Solemn High Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 o’clock in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church, Berlin. Private Pomponio died Thursday at Camp Crowder, Mo., where he had been stationed in the Army Signal Corps. He was 21.
South Jersey Man Dies at Army Camp

Pvt. Louis J. Pomponio, 21, of Taunton avenue, Berlin, died last Thursday after a short illness at Camp Crowder, Mo., where he had been stationed with the Signal Corps for the past six weeks. Private Pomponio previously was trained at Fort Blanding, Fla., and at Fort Dix. He was formerly employed by the RCA Victor, and was an amateur radio operator.
He was born in Italy and came to this country when 13 months old. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Pomponio, a sister, Rose, and a brother, Daniel.
Funeral arrangements will be made today with arrival of the body.
