C-54 transport aircraft

A C-54 transport aircraft.

Corporal Leonard Burton Schafer was the Engineer on board C-54A #42-72264 which crashed at 2:17 PM on March 19, 1945 after taking off on a local training mission from Homestead Army Air Force Base, Florida. It crashed offshore into 19 feet of water, 4.1 miles off Rock Harbor, Florida. The wreckage was located the next day. The pilot, Sumner H. Reeder, Corporal Schafer, and three other crewmembers were killed.
