Private John Joseph “Joey” Elliott Jr. was born in Pennsylvania in 1919. The son of John J. and Teresa Donovan Elliott, he had a grammar school education and according to his enlistment records was working as a welder. He was the second of five children. The Elliott family lived in Somerdale, New Jersey, where John J. Elliott Sr. had an address of c/o Humphries, 144 Westminster Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ at the time of his son’s death.

Once enlisted, Private Elliott volunteered for airborne duty, and was assigned to the 907th Field Artillery Battalion, 101st Airborne Division. The unit was redesignated the 907th Glider Field Artillery Battalion on August 15, 1944. Private Elliott was killed in action on September 19, 1944, in Holland, during the airborne assault known as Operation Market Garden.
