Corporal John Irvin was born on March 11, 1896 to William and Anna Irvin, and lived for most of his life on the family farm in Turnersville, New Jersey. When the census was taken in 1900, besides John there were two other children, older sister Edna and Amy, who was younger. Wilhelmina and Thomas came later. When the census was taken in 1910, the Irvin family lived on the Black Horse Pike in Turnersville.

John Irvin registered for the draft in June of 1917. He was called up in September of 1917, and was inducted into the United States Army on September 20 at Woodbury. After his entry into the United States Army he was promoted to Private First Class, and again to Corporal. He died in France in 1918 while serving with Company M, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division at Grand Pre. Brought home after the war, he was buried at St. John’s Methodist Cemetery in Turnersville, New Jersey. The John Irvin Post 250 of the American Legion was named in his memory.
