John Giletto
JOHN GILETTO was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1933 to Michel and Agnes Giletto. He was one of nine children. The Giletto family lived for many years at 609 South 4th Street, near the corner of South 4th Street and Royden Street. After serving in the United States Army, he was appointed to the Camden Police Department in 1960. He was promoted to Sergeant in February of 1967 and by December of 1971 had reached the rank of Lieutenant. He was then in charge of the Camden Police Department’s Juvenile Division. He had previously served as member of the Camden Police Department’s K-9 Unit, partnering with police dog Thunder.
After retiring from the Camden Police Department he went to work as an investigator for the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, retiring as a detective sergeant.
John E. Giletto married Diane Panarello and they had six children. The Gilettos lived at 203 North 41st Street in East Camden during the 1960s. John E. Giletto was last a resident of Bellmawr, New Jersey. He passed away at the age of 78 on February 23, 2012, survived by his wife, children and five grandchildren, a brother, a sister, and many nieces and nephews, as well as friends in the law enforcement community.
Camden to Promote Three to Sergeants

Three Camden patrolmen will be promoted to the rank of sergeant at 10 a.m. tomorrow, by Director of Public Safety Keith Kauffman during ceremonies at City Hall.
The three will fill out the department’s quota of 36 sergeants, replacing three retired members.
Promoted were John Giletto, 33, of 203 N. 41st Street; Virgil Ferrari, 36, of 3045 Carman Street, and Thomas Ewanickak, 50, of 320 Garden Avenue.
Giletto and Ferrari have been members of the force since 1960, and Ewanickak joined the department in 1948.

5 Juveniles Arrested in Plant Blaze
Five North Camden boys are in the Camden County Children’s Shelter at Lakeland following their arrests yesterday in connection with Sunday’s general-alarm fire at a vacant leather tanning plant at Second and Erie Streets.
The boys, between the ages of 11 and 14, all live in the vicinity of the waterfront plant, police said.
Three of the juveniles are charged with malicious burning; two, with trespassing.

They will be arraigned before Camden County Juvenile Court Judge Angelo D. Malandra.
Camden Police Lt. John Giletto, head of the juvenile division, said the boys told police they and other juveniles had been using the former John R. Evans Co. plant as a clubhouse.
They said they panicked and fled when a fire they started in the building Sunday got out of control, Giletto said.
Possibly $200,000
The building’s owner, Thomas Greiff, president of Greiff Trucking Co. of Brooklyn, N.Y., placed his loss at between $100,000 and $200,000, according to City Fire Marshal Harold Pike.
Greiff said there was no insurance on the building, Pike said.
Fireman Thomas DiBiaso, 38, who was injured fighting the blaze, was in fair condition in Cooper Hospital.

John E. Giletto, on February 23, 2012, of Bellmawr, formerly of Camden. Age 78. Beloved husband of 56 years of Diane (nee Panarello). Devoted father of James Giletto, Anthony Giletto, Christina Bryson (Mark), Diane Myles (Bart), Janet McClernan (Kevin) and John Giletto (Mitzi). Mr. Giletto proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a Camden City Police Lieutenant and retired as detective sergeant with the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.
