Biography
Sergeant John C. Duffy was the only child of Joseph J. and Anna L. Duffy. He was born in Pennsylvania on May 21, 1922. The elder Duffy worked as a pharmacist in East Camden, not far from where the Duffy family lived, at 1507 48th Street in the Delaware Gardens neighborhood of Pennsauken, NJ.
John Duffy enlisted in the United States Army in August of 1942. He was killed in action while serving in Germany on March 19, 1945. He was survived by his parents, and an uncle, John Duffy, of Philadelphia.
Sergeant Duffy was brought home to New Jersey and buried at Arlington Cemetery on December 11, 1947. Sadly, Joseph Duffy died of a heart attack only nine days after his son’s burial. Sergeant Duffy is memorialized at the Delaware Gardens War Memorial in Pennsauken, NJ.

Father Dies 9 Days After Son’s Rites
A Pennsauken man died suddenly at his home Saturday, nine days after funeral services for a soldier son killed in France in 1945.
Joseph J. Duffy, 58, of 1507 Forty-eighth street, a pharmacist, died of a heart attack.
The soldier was his only son, Pvt. John C., killed in action March 19, 1945, in France, was returned home Dec. 10 and buried in Arlington cemetery the following day.
Mr. Duffy, employed in an East Camden drugstore, complained of feeling ill while at the funeral of Robert Charles Taylor, a friend, who took him home. He collapsed and died a short time later. Coroner Joseph Langford, of Pennsauken, issued a certificate ascribing death to a heart ailment.
Surviving Mr. Duffy are his widow, Anna L., of the Pennsauken address, and a brother John, of Philadelphia.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in a funeral home at 4527 Central avenue, Pennsauken. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery.
