John Arthur Hawkins

Signalman Third Class John Arthur Hawkins was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hawkins, of 1606 Broadway, in Camden NJ. His father was a veteran of World War I. He had worked for the New Jersey Bottling Company and lived in the Canterbury Apartments in Camden prior to going into the Navy, in August of 1942. He was a crew member of a landing craft, LCI-416. Mortally wounded on D-Day, he died as a result of his injuries on June 7, 1944 at the age of 19. His ship did not survive him long. LCI-416 was sunk by a German mine on June 9th.

John Arthur Hawkins was survived by his parents, and a sister, Mae Jagdman. His death was reported in the August 3, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post, and again on October 17, 1944.
