John Allen Henkel

Seaman Second Class John Allen Henkel had grown up in Camden NJ, at 1382 Whitman Avenue. He was the son of Peter and Mary Henkel. His father had served in World War I.

John Henkel was lost when the destroyer he was serving on was torpedoed off Bougainville in November of 1943, and declared dead on November 3, 1944. He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Fratzke of Plymouth Meeting PA, his grandmother, Mrs. Virginia Henkel of 1709 Ferry Avenue, Camden NJ, and two brothers, George and Max, who were at that time both in the Armed Forces. His death was reported in the November 29, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post.

Seaman Henkel is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
