Private James Murtha was born in Pennsylvania. He lived at 322 Point Street in Camden, New Jersey.
Private Murtha was killed in action during the Battle of the Argonne Forest on October 7, 1918. He was assigned to Company L, 337th Infantry Regiment, and later the 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was survived by his widowed mother, Mrs. Emma Murtha, younger brothers John and George, and younger sisters Helen and Ruth, all of the Point Street address.

Going to France in July with the 337th Infantry, James Murtha, 29 years old, of 322 Point street, is named in yesterday’s casualty list as having died from wounds sustained in action. Early in December his parents received a letter from him in which he stated that he was in good health, and his mother is clinging to the belief that the sad news from Washington is not true. Murtha was originally in the cavalry.
