Private James L. Murray was born July 1, 1890 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He and his family later moved to Audubon, New Jersey. He had been a member of the Logan Memorial Presbyterian Church at 2 West Merchant Street in Audubon.

James L. Murray was a lithographer by trade, and worked in Philadelphia for the Ketterlinus Lithograph Company at 4th and Arch streets. He enlisted in the United States Army Medical Corps on May 30, 1917 but had not reported on June 5th when he registered for the draft. Soon afterwards he was sent to camp at Allentown, Pennsylvania for training in the United States Army Ambulance Corps. Private Murray served as an ambulance driver during the Battle of Belleau Wood and the bombardment of Paris. He arrived in France on December 23, 1917.

Private James L. Murray died of pneumonia at Red Cross Military Hospital, No. 3, Paris, on October 20, 1918. He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna E. Murray, a sister, Blanche P. Murray, and a cousin, Frank S. Boya.

The Murray-Trout American Legion Post 262 in Audubon, New Jersey is named in part for him.
