J. Walter Trappe
John Walter Bradley Trappe was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on September 9, 1894. He served in the Pennsylvania National Guard prior to America’s entry into World War I and had attended the Y.M.C.A. College in Springfield, Massachusetts. By June of 1917 he had moved to Merchantville, New Jersey.
On May 16, 1923 J. Walter Trappe went to work as an audit clerk in Camden’s comptroller’s office, and on October 1 of that year was named deputy comptroller. He held that post for more than 34 years. His last day on the job was December 31, 1957.
A resident of Camden until his dying day, J. Walter Trappe died in May of 1976.

J. Walter Trappe, veteran Camden city deputy comptroller, submitted his resignation effective Dec. 31 to the city commission Thursday afternoon.
The resignation was accepted “with regrets” by the five commission members.
Trappe, who lives at 2844 Stevens st., became a city employe in the comptroller’s office as an audit clerk May 16, 1923 and on Oct. 1 of that year was named deputy comptroller.

He has served under former comptroller Sydney P. McCord and under the present comptroller, Dr. Ethan A. Lang. Trappe’s present salary is $7500.
“We appreciate your services rendered over a period of 33 years,” Mayor Brunner told Trappe.
Speaking to the other commissioners, the mayor described Trappe as a “very loyal and ardent city employe” and added it was with “deep regret that we will lose the services of a very efficient employe.” The other four commissioners concurred in the mayor’s comments with City Commissioner Garrity commenting the retirement of Trappe also would be “a loss to the people of our city.”
