Introduction
Herman J. “Harry” Vollmer was born in Pennsylvania in 1893 and came to Camden as a boy. He married around 1911. At the time of the 1920 census, he lived at 1129 South 2nd Street and was working as a fireman on the railroad ferries between Philadelphia and Camden.
Vollmer later became president of the Camden Building Trades Council, serving as a prominent labor leader in South Camden. He eventually moved to Cressona, Pennsylvania, where he died on January 24, 1950.

Herman J. Vollmer, former Camden labor leader, died in his home, Front and Nash streets, Cressona, Pa., Tuesday. He was a former president of the Camden Building Trades Council and chairman of the executive board of that group. Mr. Vollmer was an agent of Iron Workers Local 399, AFL. Mr. Vollmer had resided in South Camden and was known to many of his friends and a widow, Mrs. Alma Turse, China, Calif., and three daughters, Mary, Church, Camden; three sons, John, Lindenwold; Herman, Cressona, and Carleton, Camden; a brother, William, Cressona. Funeral services and burial will be in Cressona, Saturday.
