Captain George J. Oliver was born in 1909 to Joseph and Mary Oliver. His early days were spent in Stratford, New Jersey, where his father, a cashier for a motor car company in 1930, had owned a home on Atlantic Avenue, next door to the family of Samuel Priest. Their son, William Priest, also would lose his life in the nation’s service during World War II. In 1930 George Oliver was working as a clerk in a warehouse, and his sister Catherine was a stenographer. The family later moved to 226 Elm Street in Haddonfield.

George Oliver entered the Army early in 1942. He was commissioned as an officer and served in the Quartermaster Corps. On March 3, 1945, the Camden Courier-Post reported that he had been promoted to Captain, and was then serving at Camp Polk, Louisiana.

Captain Oliver died sometime in 1946. He was buried at Locustwood Burial Park in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and he is memorialized on the Haddonfield, New Jersey War Memorial.
