George J. Mikels

Camden Firefighter

Introduction

George J. Mikels was born on March 4, 1914 in Camden, New Jersey. He was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on June 14, 1949 and reported for duty on June 16, 1949, serving as Badge No. 108. He resided at 568 Berkeley Street and later at 2809 Folk Avenue.

Throughout his career, Mikels served in multiple engine companies, including Engine Co. #9 (June 1949 – December 1964), a temporary assignment to Engine Co. #2 (January 1965), Engine Co. #10 (January 20, 1965), and Engine Co. #3, 2nd Platoon (August 2, 1965 onward). He was capable of serving as Acting Captain, Driver, and Pump Operator.

On November 24, 1962, Mikels received a Colonel Bedell Special Mention certificate for his heroic rescue of three children from a fire.
