Frederick Bermel

Machinist's Mate First Class Frederick Bermel was born in Maryland in 1897. In 1920 he was serving in the United States Navy as a Fireman Third Class on the USS Murray (DD-97), a Wickes-class destroyer, based in Boston, MA. At that time he gave his home address as 4727 Locust Street in Baltimore, MD. At some point after this time, he married and made his home in Camden, NJ.

A member of the United States Naval Reserve, Frederick Bermel was killed in action during the landings in North Africa in November of 1942. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife, Mary Lou Bermel, of 814 Penn Street, Camden, NJ. He is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at North Africa American Cemetery, Carthage, Tunisia.
