Pine Street Gunner Sends Parents Description of Odd Battle at Lorient, France; Victory Ended German “Control” of Big Harbor
Fred Tamru of Pine Street, Camden, was part of the first American artillery crew to sink a Nazi ship at Lorient, France. In a letter to his parents, Tamru described how the gun crew gradually brought their fire closer to the German vessel until one of their rounds struck it directly, sending chunks of iron flying into the air. “The ship hit!” the gunners yelled. The action helped end German control of the major harbor at Lorient.
